Vancouver's Permitting Improvement Program

The City of Vancouver's latest permitting improvements are anticipated to save up to 13,800 weeks of processing.

Addressing our development and building permitting process is a top priority for us. Over the last 2 years, we have worked hard to improve permit processing times and are seeing positive impacts and shorter wait times. As a result:

  • All permit applications can be applied for online and processed electronically through ePlan – including development and building permits

  • Permits for simple renovations are issued in as little as 2 weeks

  • Plans for houses, duplexes, and laneways can now be checked by staff in as little as 2 1/2 weeks

  • Our updated review process significantly reduces the need to address previously-completed unpermitted work, unless it is a life-safety concern

Despite these improvements, we understand businesses and residents are still struggling through the permit process. To help permit applications be processed more quickly, we are shifting toward customer-focused transformational change using technology.

Next Steps

  • Simplify development permit conditions to speed up review

  • Launch online business licence application form

  • Reduce the number of steps in our review processes

  • Identifying clear application processes and anticipated processing timelines

  • Simplify the review process for renovation permits in line with the changes made to low-density applications

  • Take on an extensive review of the development permit process.

  • Conduct a comprehensive review of the Protection of Trees By-law.

  • Assess the implications of guaranteed permitting timelines.
